Get ready
Your coach checks the fit of your mask and protective clothing, shows you how to hold the épée, and explains when to start and stop fencing.
Try épée with a coach. No experience needed; trial equipment is provided.
Meet your coach, get fitted for equipment, and learn the safety rules before trying the movements. You will practice holding the épée, moving forward and back, and scoring a controlled touch. When you are ready, the coach introduces short bouts with a partner. You do not need to know the rules in advance.
Wear long athletic pants and sneakers, bring water, and arrive about 10 minutes early.

Practice moving forward and back, finding the target, and keeping enough distance to make a controlled action. Short partner exercises help put those movements together.
Try short bouts with a coach explaining the score and what to work on. The aim is to understand the exchange and get comfortable fencing another person.
Continue in the regular class for your age group, or in the separate adult beginner and intermediate class. Your coach can explain which package fits your experience and available days. Regular practice gives you time to revisit the movements, meet more training partners, and get comfortable with the sport.
Trial equipment is free. After your trial, rent an assigned take-home protective kit and carry bag for $15/month with a $100 refundable deposit, or purchase your own gear. Your coach will help with fitting. Equipment rental details
